Chapter Fourteen

“Kitty, darling, time to get up.”

With a whine and grumble, she rolled over, hiding her face in the pillow. As consciousness slowly returned, she sat up. Edvard was partially dressed. Thin body armor covered his chest. She watched as he checked a blaster and slid it into the harness at his side. It was the same spot on his body against which she’d rested her head as she’d slept.

“I’ve laid out clothes for you in the dressing room. You have twenty minutes.” He watched her as she slid from bed and pulled down her gown from where it had bunched up around her waist. “No headache?”

More alcohol had gone down her throat last night than in all of the previous days of her life. “No, I had myself inoculated against inebriation. It gives me a slight buzz for a few minutes if I drink it fast enough,” she said as she walked past him and into the bathroom.

Moments later, she was dressed in loose black palazzo pants, a baby-blue long-sleeved top, black jacket, and boots. A set of dainty blasters powerful enough to punch a hole through a transport slid into holsters hidden in the boots.

Edvard asked, “Do you know how to use those efficiently?”

“I do.” She met his eyes from across the room.

“Good. See that you don’t ever allow anyone other than me to cause you any pain. Do you understand?”

She grinned at him.

“I’m serious.” He stepped closer and held onto her outer arms. “Don’t ever allow anyone to harm you. If there is ever a question, shoot first, and call Max for clean-up later.” His fervor gave her pause.

“Careful or you might make me believe you have sincere feelings for me and not only those of a carnal variety.” A sadness had entered her eyes, and he noticed.

“Oh, but I do. Aside from fitting in perfectly with all of my plans, you’ve managed to wedge yourself into my very being.”

Her eyes began to fill with moisture. “Oh? How did I manage to do such a thing?”

He slid his hands from her arms to her back. Holding her close, he closed his eyes and kissed the top of her head. “I knew the moment when I first woke up with you beside me in my bed, and even though I’d purposefully hurt you to find my pleasure, you still desired me. From that moment, I knew.” He again kissed her forehead and wiped at one of her stray tears as it fell. “No more of that. Brush your hair and apply some lipstick. Our schedule is set.” He wasn’t one for sentimentality.

Outside as they rushed toward the awaiting shuttle, she spotted a recording drone. “Do you see it?” She asked while holding his hand.

“They watch our every move. In fact, the other day our guests used the distraction of an errant pet to drop a signal booster in our bushes.”

“They’re spying on us?” Stepping inside of the shuttle, she took her seat.

Edvard followed while Max sealed the hatch and went to the pilot’s seat to take them up.
